I’m continuing with my quest to make some progress in my series reading. This is the third book in a series that’s not exactly a cozy mystery, but not exactly a hard boiled crime mystery either. Carlotta Carlyle is a former cop, but now she’s working as a private detective and supplementing her income as a part time cab driver in Boston.

In this book, Carlotta’s gets a new client. It’s a woman who needs some help getting her missing green card back. The woman then disappears and when a body is found with the supposedly missing green card, Carlotta is not sure who her client really is (or was?). The first thing she needs to do is to find out who it was who gave this woman Carlotta’s business card. If she can find out who referred her, maybe she can find her client, or at least find out the woman’s true identity.

Things get even more complicated when Carlotta begins to wonder if the mysterious woman is somehow connected to Carlotta’s ‘little sister’ (via the Big Sisters program), Paolina. Unfortunately, neither Paolina, nor her mother are being honest with Carlotta.

The story involves illegal aliens, the people who prey on them, the INS and, of course, Carlotta’s friends in the Boston Police Department.

I’m liking this series more and more with each book. I’m definitely looking forward to reading the next one.
